Why Kerala, specifically
Kerala developed Keraliya Chikitsa — a distinct Ayurvedic tradition emphasising oil-based external therapies (Pizhichil, Navarakizhi, Shirodhara) to a degree not common in North Indian practice. The monsoon season, June to August, is considered optimal for treatment: cool humid air opens body channels, skin is more receptive to oil absorption, and the body is most responsive to purification. The Kerala government's AYUSH department has classified and graded Ayurvedic hospitals — a quality signal that separates genuine clinical establishments from wellness tourism aesthetics. Look for that classification before booking.
The retreats that do it properly
Somatheeram Ayurveda Resort in Kovalam is India's most awarded authentic Ayurvedic resort, ISO 9001 certified, with resident BAMS and MD (Ayu) physicians and full programmes from 7 to 28 days. CGH Earth Kalari Kovilakom in Palakkad — a 19th-century palace — requires a minimum 14-day stay with no alcohol, no outside food, and no WiFi; it is the most medically serious retreat in India. Carnoustie in Mararikulam offers luxury beachfront alongside a genuine clinical operation with BAMS and MD (Ayu) physicians. Niraamaya Retreats in Kovalam offers a more intimate boutique experience in a clifftop setting. Kairali Ayurvedic Health Village in Palakkad delivers full Panchakarma at significantly lower price points than coastal resorts.
The one question to ask before booking
Ask a single question: Is there a resident BAMS-qualified physician on site — not visiting, not on-call, but resident? If the answer is no, or if the minimum Panchakarma stay is offered as three days or a day treatment, you are looking at a wellness spa with Ayurvedic aesthetics. Authentic Panchakarma requires a minimum seven days and physician oversight at every stage. The medicated oils used in genuine Keraliya practice are prepared in-house from classical formulas — not commercial branded massage oil. This distinction is practical, not sentimental: the therapeutic mechanism of Panchakarma depends on precision of preparation and timing that only resident physician supervision can provide.
